Quick Tip 4: Get things done AND enjoy the ride
Here’s a good one for you. Almost ridiculous in its simplicity and yet it holds the secret to banishing procrastination, bringing out the best in your team, improving your relationships and generally having a happy and productive life!
Sounds too good to be true, I know, but read on, you’ll see. So here it is…
What you focus on is what you get.
Yep. That’s it. I’ll say it again. What you FOCUS on, is what you get.
If you are feeling tired, and you tell yourself you are feeling tired and you tell others about how tired you are and you notice all the physical symptoms of your tiredness and that you are not able to concentrate or do things properly because you’re so tired… What do you know? You get more ‘tired’.
(For tired, you can insert any undesirable feeling, thought, sensation- stress, pain, annoyance, frustration, anger)
This is not serving you. It’s just a bad habit. And the good news is it is easy to break. All it takes is awareness (it’s coming as you read this), a willingness to change (this is growing right now too!) and a good dose of persistence (this one’s up to you when you close this e mail). The even better news is that it is a fun and highly rejuvenating thing to do.
So here’s the HOW
Our bodies and minds are wonderful things. They come with a built-in warning device to remind you to CHECK YOUR FOCUS.
Any time you feel uncomfortable/ unhappy/ conflicted/ anxious, any time you are experiencing ANY undesirable thought or feeling, just ask yourself:
- What am I focusing on RIGHT NOW?
- Is this focus moving me towards or away from the results I want?
If it is moving you towards, GREAT! Keep going. Focus even more.
If not- GREAT! Now you know to change your focus on what will take you towards your outcome.
If you tell yourself you are absolutely exhausted and can’t go on, YOU’RE RIGHT! And worse, if you do have to go on, you are making sure it will be one heck of an unpleasant experience.
You make it true, simply because you tell yourself it is so.
Do yourself a favour and tell yourself, instead, something that will help you turn things around and move in a direction that will build confidence in yourself and your abilities.
It doesn’t matter what you tell yourself. It doesn’t matter whether it is ‘true’ or not. All that matters is whether it will take you closer to where you need to be.
Take a deep breath and tell yourself instead:
- I have all the energy I need, and more, to get this done.
- Every time I breathe in, I am building even more energy.
- I am superwo/man! I can do anything!
- I feel fantastic!
Really, it does not matter. In fact, the more ridiculous the counter-belief you tell yourself, the better, because it will make you laugh and that, in itself, is a great remedy.
This is not rocket science folks, but remember, it is all meaningless without ACTION.
I promise it works- you just have to do the do.
So go on. Start today. Teach the technique to your team, your friends, your kids.
